St. Paul's Steve Walsh and Pat Eilers Headline 2023 Sport Shirt Stag
The 42nd Nativity Men's Club Sport Shirt Stag featured two St. Paul legends, Cretin Derham Hall's Steve Walsh and St. Thomas Academy's Pat Eilers (Nativity '81), who both played key roles on opposite sides of the field, in the infamous 1988 Catholics vs. Convicts football game between the #1 ranked University of Miami Hurricanes and #4 ranked University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish, regarded as one of the best college football games ever played. The game and the surrounding events were featured in an ESPN 30 for 30 documentary.
Walsh was the starting quarterback for the top ranked Hurricanes. Eilers, a walk on running back for the Irish, scored a key 3rd quarter touchdown in the game, that was eventually won by Notre Dame 31-30 on the last play, when Miami failed to complete a two point conversion to win the game. Notre Dame went on to win the national championship.
Walsh went on to a long NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints, Chicago Bears , St. Louis Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts. In 2022, he was named the Head Football Coach at Cretin Derham Hall.
Eilers also went on to play in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings, Washington and the Chicago Bears before a successful career in business. He now sits on the Board of Trustees at St. Thomas Academy.
